Can family visit in SIL? And other common questions

This is a question we get asked regularly at Acme. And it makes sense, because SIL is one of those NDIS terms that sounds straightforward but has a lot of detail underneath.

The short version

Answers to the questions families ask most about supported independent living. That covers the basics. But the reality of how this works day to day is worth understanding properly, especially if you or someone in your family is considering SIL as an option.

How it works in practice

SIL is funded through your NDIS plan under Core Supports. The amount of funding depends on your assessed support needs, which are usually determined through a functional capacity assessment by an OT. The support can be delivered in shared houses with other NDIS participants, individual apartments, or sometimes in a participant's own home.

What participants tell us

The thing we hear most from SIL residents is that it took a while to adjust, but once they settled in, they could not imagine going back. Independence looks different for everyone. For some of our residents, it is learning to cook their own meals. For others, it is managing their own budget for the first time. For some, it is just having their own space where they make the rules.

The transition is not always smooth. There are bumps. New routines take time to build. Housemate relationships require patience. Support workers need time to learn your preferences. But with the right provider and the right approach, it works.
