Medication errors are a serious issue for people managing complex health conditions at home. Taking the wrong dose, missing a dose, dangerous interactions between medications, side effects that go unnoticed. When you are on multiple prescriptions, the margin for error is small and the consequences can be significant.
Under the NDIS, medication management by a registered nurse is a funded support. But there is confusion about what a nurse can do versus what a support worker can do, and how to get medication management into your plan.
Nurse vs support worker
A support worker can prompt you to take your medication. They can remind you that it is time, hand you the right pill from a pre packed webster pack, and note that you took it. What they cannot do is make clinical decisions about your medication. They cannot assess whether a medication is working, adjust doses, administer injections, or manage complex medication interactions.
A registered nurse can do all of those things. They can administer oral, topical, inhaled, and injectable medications. They can organise webster packs, review your full medication list for interactions, monitor side effects, manage PRN (as needed) medications, and coordinate with your GP and pharmacist.
If your medication regime is straightforward, a support worker with reminding is probably fine. If it is complex, you need a nurse.
How to get it funded
Medication management falls under Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) in your NDIS plan. If you do not currently have nursing funded in your plan, you need evidence from your GP or specialist explaining why professional medication management is necessary. The evidence should describe the complexity of your medication regime, the risks of errors, and why a registered nurse is needed rather than a support worker.
At Acme, our nurses handle medication management for participants across SEQ. They build individualised medication plans, maintain detailed records, and keep your GP and pharmacist informed. Call 07 3063 3362 to discuss your needs.
