Navigating the NDIS system as a family member or carer is not always straightforward. The rules change, the terminology is confusing, and it is not always clear what you are entitled to or how to access it.
What you need to know
A guide for family members supporting someone through the NDIS process. This is one of those areas where practical knowledge matters more than policy documents. Here is what we have learned from working with families across South East Queensland for 15 years.
The practical side
Most families we work with are trying to balance their own lives with supporting a participant through a system that was not designed to be user friendly. Plans change. Funding categories are confusing. Providers vary wildly in quality. The participants themselves have opinions and preferences that do not always align with what the family thinks is best.
Our advice is always the same: focus on what the participant wants, get good evidence for plan reviews, and find a provider you can actually communicate with. The rest usually falls into place.
Where to get help
Support coordinators are funded through the NDIS and their whole job is to help you navigate the system. A good coordinator is worth their weight in gold. They know the local providers, they understand the funding rules, and they can advocate for you during plan reviews.
If you do not have a support coordinator, or if the one you have is not responsive, talk to your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) about getting coordination into your next plan.
If you are a family member looking for NDIS support in SEQ, call 07 3063 3362. We work with families every day and are happy to answer questions about how things actually work, not just how they are supposed to work.
