NDIS plan managed vs self managed explained

The actual differences between plan management and self management, and which one makes more sense for your situation.

When you get your NDIS plan, one of the first decisions you need to make is how you want to manage your funding. There are three options: NDIA managed, plan managed, or self managed. Most of the confusion sits between plan managed and self managed, so that is what we will focus on.

Plan managed

A plan manager is a person or organisation that handles the financial side of your NDIS plan. They process invoices from your providers, track your spending, and make sure everything lines up with your budget. You still choose your own providers and make your own decisions about services. The plan manager just handles the money side.

The big advantage of plan management is that you can use both registered and unregistered providers, and you do not have to deal with invoicing, bookkeeping, or claiming. Your plan manager does all of that. The cost of plan management comes out of a separate budget line in your plan, so it does not eat into your support funding.

The downside is that you are adding another person to the mix. If your plan manager is slow to process invoices, your providers do not get paid on time, and that can cause problems. Choosing a responsive plan manager matters.

Self managed

Self management means you handle everything yourself. You pay providers, keep receipts, submit claims through the NDIS participant portal, track your budget, and make sure you comply with NDIS pricing rules.

The advantage is full control. You can use any provider, negotiate rates, and have complete visibility over your spending. Some participants find this empowering.

The downside is that it is genuinely time consuming. You need to be organised, comfortable with financial admin, and willing to keep records that the NDIA might audit. If bookkeeping is not your thing, self management can become a burden rather than a benefit.

Which one makes more sense

For most participants we work with, plan management is the sweet spot. You get provider flexibility without the admin workload. Self management works well for people who are already comfortable managing finances and want maximum control.

There is no wrong answer here. You can also change your management type at your next plan review if your current setup is not working.
