Pressure injury prevention for wheelchair users

How to prevent pressure injuries if you use a wheelchair, and when to involve a nurse.

Health management for NDIS participants often falls into a gap between disability support and the health system. The NDIS covers disability related supports. Medicare covers health care. But when your health condition is directly related to your disability, things get complicated.

What this means in practice

How to prevent pressure injuries if you use a wheelchair, and when to involve a nurse. Understanding which system covers what, and how to access the right support, makes a real difference to your health outcomes.

The NDIS role

The NDIS funds supports that help you manage health conditions related to your disability. This includes community nursing for wound care, medication management, catheter care, and diabetes monitoring. It includes personal care that helps you maintain hygiene and nutrition. It includes transport to medical appointments.

What the NDIS does not cover is treatment that Medicare already funds, like GP visits, specialist consultations, or hospital admissions. The line between the two is not always clear, and participants sometimes get caught between systems.

Practical steps

Make sure your GP and your NDIS providers communicate with each other. Health information needs to flow between your medical team and your support team. At Acme, our nurses coordinate with GPs, specialists, and allied health professionals as part of standard practice. That coordination role is as important as the clinical care itself.

If you have health needs that require clinical support at home, call 07 3063 3362. Our APHRA registered nurses can help.
