Transport is one of those NDIS topics that sounds simple but gets complicated quickly. How much funding do you get? What can you use it for? Who can provide it? Here is what we know from 15 years of delivering transport support across SEQ.
The basics
What travel training involves, how long it takes, and how it builds real transport independence. Transport funding sits under Core Supports in your NDIS plan, specifically under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation. The amount you get depends on your disability, your current transport options, and how often you need to travel.
What transport support actually looks like
At Acme, our transport service covers door to door accompanied travel, public transport training, community access transport, and wheelchair accessible travel. The most common use is getting participants to medical appointments and therapy sessions. But it also covers social outings, shopping trips, day programs, education, employment, and community events.
Our transport workers are trained support workers, not taxi drivers. They help with vehicle transfers, wheelchair loading, and they accompany you to wherever you are going. If you need help at the other end, they stay with you.
Travel training
For participants who want to build their transport independence, we run travel training programs. A support worker accompanies you on public transport routes, teaching you timetables, ticketing, navigation, and problem solving. Over time, they step back as your confidence grows. The goal is for you to eventually travel those routes on your own.
If you need transport support or want to learn about travel training, call 07 3063 3362. We cover all six SEQ regions.
