Core supports is the largest funding category in most NDIS plans. It covers the everyday help you need because of your disability. But the way the budget is structured confuses a lot of people, and that confusion can lead to either underspending (leaving money on the table) or spending on the wrong things.
The four core support categories
Core supports is split into four sub categories. Assistance with Daily Life covers personal care, household help, and in home support. Transport covers the cost of getting you to activities, appointments, and community events. Consumables covers everyday items related to your disability like continence products. Assistance with Social and Community Participation covers support workers who help you get out and do things in the community.
Here is the part that trips people up: in most plans, core support funding is flexible. That means you can shift money between the four sub categories within core supports, as long as you are not using registered providers for something your plan specifies differently. If you are plan managed or self managed, this flexibility is even greater.
How much is enough
Your core supports budget is based on your assessed needs. If the NDIA determines you need 10 hours a week of personal care, your core budget will reflect that at NDIS price guide rates. If you think the amount is not enough, you can request a plan review with updated evidence from your care team.
A lot of participants we work with are surprised when their first plan comes through, either because the amounts are lower than expected or because the categories do not match how they thought the funding would work. This is normal. Your first plan is a starting point. Most people adjust at their first review once they understand how the system works in practice.
Common mistakes
Underspending is the most common one. Participants hold back on using their funding because they are worried about running out or unsure what they are allowed to spend on. Then the plan period ends and money is left over, which can actually reduce your next plan because the NDIA sees you did not use what you had.
Use your plan. That is the whole point. If you need help understanding what you can and cannot use your core supports for, talk to your plan manager or call us.
