Your home, your rules

SIL is about having a home where you actually feel at home. Not a facility. Not a group house that feels institutional. A place where you have your own space, your own routine, and people around who help you manage daily life without taking it over.

At Acme, we run SIL properties across South East Queensland. Some are shared houses, some are individual units. Each one is maintained properly, staffed 24/7, and managed by David Okonkwo, who takes it personally when something is not right with a property or a resident's experience.

We know that moving into SIL is a big decision. For some participants, it is the first time living away from family. For others, it is a change from a provider that was not working out. Either way, we take the transition seriously. We do not rush it. We introduce you to potential housemates, let you visit properties, and make sure the match feels right before anything is finalised.

What SIL actually means

Supported independent living is an NDIS funded support that covers the cost of workers who help you live in your own home or a shared living arrangement. The workers assist with daily tasks, personal care, cooking, cleaning, and getting out into the community. SIL does not cover the rent or the property itself, that is separate (covered by SDA or your own rental arrangement).

SIL is for participants who need regular or continuous support to live safely. How much support varies. Some residents need someone around 24/7. Others need a few hours a day. We design the support model around you, not the other way around.

What we do in SIL

24/7 on site support

Our SIL properties are staffed around the clock with qualified workers who know you, know your care plan, and know your preferences. Whether you need help at 7am or 2am, someone is there. We roster consistent workers so you build genuine relationships with the people supporting you.

Building your daily living skills

Cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, grocery shopping, time management, personal organisation. We work on these skills progressively. We start with where you are at and build from there. The goal is for you to need us a little less over time. That is success.

Personal care

Showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, and meals. Same person centred approach as our standalone personal care service. Dignity, choice, consistency.

Getting out into the community

SIL is not about staying inside. Our workers help you access social activities, sporting events, shopping, appointments, and recreational programs. They also help you build your own social connections, which is more valuable long term than always going out with a worker.

Health and wellbeing

Our SIL team monitors your physical and mental health. They liaise with your GP, allied health team, and our in house nurses. They keep records, track how you are going, and respond quickly if something changes.

Our SIL properties

Wheelchair accessible where needed. Individual bedrooms with secure storage. Shared living, dining, and kitchen areas. Accessible bathrooms. Outdoor spaces and gardens. Close to public transport and shops. Smoke detectors, emergency lighting, and safety equipment. David Okonkwo inspects every property regularly and responds to maintenance requests within 24 hours.

Who can access SIL

You need to have been assessed as requiring support to live independently. That usually involves a functional capacity assessment by an OT or allied health professional, plus evidence that SIL is reasonable and necessary for your goals. Your NDIS plan needs to include SIL funding under Core Supports, Assistance with Daily Life.

If you do not have SIL in your plan but believe you need it, our team can assist you with the assessment process and provide the documentation required for a plan review.

Frequently asked questions

What is SIL under the NDIS?

Supported independent living covers the cost of support workers who help you live in your own home or shared accommodation. They assist with daily tasks, personal care, household management, and community access. It is for participants who need regular or continuous support.

How is SIL different from SDA?

SIL is the support, the workers and services. SDA is the property, the physical home with its accessibility features. They are funded separately. You can have SIL in an SDA property, a private rental, or your own home. Acme provides both.

How much does SIL cost?

Depends on your support level, number of residents sharing, and hours provided. Funded through your NDIS plan. Rates follow NDIS Pricing Arrangements. No out of pocket cost for funded SIL. We prepare a detailed quote for the NDIA.

Can I pick my housemates?

Yes. We consider preferences, compatibility, lifestyle, and interests. We arrange meet and greets so you can get to know potential housemates before committing.

What if I want to move out?

You can leave SIL at any time. We support you through the transition and update your plan.

How do I get SIL funding?

Functional capacity assessment, SIL quote from us, plan review request to the NDIA. We guide you through the whole process.

Does Acme provide 24/7 SIL?

Yes. All our SIL properties are staffed 24/7 with consistent workers.

Can family visit in SIL?

Of course. It is your home. Visitors and family welcome. Overnight stays usually fine with advance notice.

When participants come to us with concerns

? "I am scared about leaving the family home"

That is normal. It is a huge step. We offer trial stays, gradual transition plans, and ongoing communication with families. We do not push anyone into anything. The timeline is yours.

Talk about transitioning

? "My last SIL provider was not great"

Inconsistent staff, neglected properties, no real person centred care. If that has been your experience, we are happy to offer a fresh start. Come visit our properties and meet the team. See the difference for yourself.

Arrange a property visit

? "I do not know how to get SIL funding"

The funding process is complicated. We walk you through it step by step. Assessment, SIL quote, NDIA submission. We work with your support coordinator to build the strongest possible case.
